Karen is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the capital district near Albany. She began studying violin at a young age and spent the majority of her youth performing in a number of regional orchestras. She graduated from Shaker High School and took a post graduate year of study at Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Mi. She received a Chancellor's Talent Award to study violin at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During her time at UMASS she also played trumpet in the Power and Class of New England, the UMASS Marching Band. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. Karen moved back to New York and taught a variety of different levels including high school band, elementary general music, and beginning orchestra and band. She moved back to the Boston area and found a home at Neighborhood House Charter School twelve years ago. While teaching full time she also completed her Masters of Music Education at the Boston Conservatory. She has taken numerous workshops and courses in the Orff and Kodaly music methodologies. |
